The capital city of Illinois, Springfield's most famous resident was Abraham Lincoln, who lived here from 1837 until moving to the White House in Washington D.C. as he assumed the Presidency in 1861. There are many historical landmarks in Springfield related to President Lincoln, including the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, a National Historical Park that includes the preserved surrounding neighborhood, several other buildings and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Every August the city of Springfield hosts the Illinois State Fair and the city also has ample parks and the Henson Robinson Zoo. In 2004, Springfield was the Labor Day weekend host of the International Twins Association for their annual convention.
