The Stone Mountain monument began in 1924 with a model carving of Robert E. Lee by famous sculpturer, Gutzon Borglum, who also supervised Mount Rushmore. It was finally finished in 1972 with carvings of three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, Lee, Stonewall Jackson and Jefferson Davis.

Located outside Atlanta, the monument is contained within a Georgia state park.
